5 Ways to Turn Obstacles into Opportunities

Why does this keep happening to me? Nothing ever goes away until it has taught us what we need to know. It’s important to deal with obstacles like opportunities so that we can be persistent with making every day better.

1. Go Round me

It’s ok to slow down and wave people on past you on your way to your goal. Don’t be scared to stop and try and connect the dots. Obstacles will be all you can see if that’s all you’re looking for. How you overcome your obstacles will be how you determine your success. Don’t give up; Go round me.

2. Camel or Lion?

You have a bright future.

Can you see it as a camel with your head in the sand?

Or do you stand like a lion hukuna-matata style on the edge of a cliff?

There will always be obstacles along the way. Hoping they will go away and that things will fall in place is not the answer. There’s no worries when you know that you can find a solution in every problem. You can measure your progress and celebrate your short term goals to move yourself faster towards your overarching goal.

3. I can’t do that!

Yes. You. Can.

When I was younger I wanted to be a professional basketball player. I wanted to be taller but this was way beyond my control. Instead of thinking about what I couldn’t do I focussed on honing the skills I could use. Now I am a brilliant softball player and I love it. I always use the elements of life I can’t control to create solutions to climb over the wall that stopped my dream and make it into an even better dream then I ever imagined.

4. Well that’s just….

What if you went a day suspending all labels, all judgements, all evaluation and analysis? What if the day was ‘well, that just is how it is’ rather then ‘well, that’s just…’?

Think like the creative minds of George Prince who said, “Giving myself permission to wish puts to sleep my judgment and negative caution and activates my courage to dare”, and William Blake, the poet, who said, “What is now proved, was once only imagined”.

Develop an unshakable belief in yourself and your abilities. You deserve it.

5. Have a helpful mindset.

Our brains have nerve pathways called the reticular activating system (RAS). The RAS receives directions from various parts of the brain, decides which pieces of information are useful, and makes a command happen accordingly. What this means is we can program our minds to be positive and search for viable solutions. Developing the right mindset is the best solution for overcoming obstacles and achieving goals.

Obstacles are inevitable. All successful people have faced and overcome their own obstacles. Conviction in your goals, a smart plan, creative solutions, and the right mindset can give you a powerful determination to succeed.
